The Japanese Kitchen – Izakaya at Home

August 18, 2025 @ 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Izakaya is a type of casual drinking establishment, similar to a gastropub, and there are literally tens of thousands of them throughout Japan. Izakayas serve a variety of appetizers, tapa-style plates and even meals to accompany drinks and to satisfy your cravings. Each Izakaya boasts its own specialty dishes ranging from traditional Japanese food to Western inspired bar food. In this hands-on class, Chef Kanako Koizumi will teach you many of the elements of an authentic Izakaya experience including Shime (she-meh) which is the “closure” dish and usually consist of rice or noddles. In Japanese culture the ordering of the Shime dish is about capping off the night on a satisfying and memorable note. In this class your Izakaya experience will include:

  • Yaki Edamame
  • Kushiyaki Sampler (Chicken, Asparagus & Bacon, Tofu Dengaku Skewers)
  • Potato Salad
  • Niku Dofu (Beef and Tofu Stew)
  • Cold Somen Noodles (Shime)
